The game Go (Weiqi) was metaphorically known as the “Wooden Fox” in ancient times, symbolising its addictive nature. In the Qing Dynasty, the court explicitly forbade guards from playing this game. In the 41st year of Qianlong’s reign, the emperor found soldiers on duty whiling away the time by drawing a board at the Garden of Palace of Established Happiness (Jianfu gong). Furious, he not only expelled these guards from the Forbidden City but also punished the minister in charge of the garden.
