Worshipping the Moon During the Mid-Autumn Festival

52.png

Since ancient times, Chinese emperors have observed the custom of worshipping the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival (August 15 of the lunar calendar). In the Qing Dynasty, this ceremony took place at Yuetan (meaning Altar of the Moon) outside today’s Fuchengmen. The emperor, dressed in a moon-white court robe with turquoise beads and a white jade belt adorned with dragon patterns and gold decorations, would perform the ritual himself.
