According to Liu Ruoyu’s The Ming Palace History (Minggong shi), after the lunar New Year’s Day, the special food of the month in the palace was All-Is-Well Mix, made with dried persimmons, lychees, longans, chestnuts, ripe jujubes, etc. The donkey head meat served in a box was also eaten, symbolising the tradition of “chewing ghosts” since donkeys were commonly called ghosts.
