Only Two Meals a Day: Was That All the Emperor Could Eat Every Day?

In the Qing Dynasty palace, the emperor adhered to a unique dining habit, enjoying two main meals in the morning and evening. Breakfast was typically served after 6 am, though it could be delayed until 8 am; dinner followed in the afternoon, usually after 12 noon, but sometimes as late as 2 pm. Although these were the formal dining times, throughout the day, the emperor could request a variety of snacks and wine, which would be prepared and served as his mood dictated.
